Connecting with your customers

Some key takeaways on “influencing” from the recent Business Growth Summit hosted by HerBusiness.

I think life’s too short to try to learn it all yourself, and forever encourage people to learn from each other… so I am sharing some of the key takeaways so you don’t miss out.

Today’s takeaways are from author Robert Cialdini.  His focus areas are human behaviour around influence and negotiation and his books ‘Influence’ (and now ‘Pre-suasion’) are now on my reading list.  Two of my takeaways:

  • People determine what’s important to them in any given situation… eg price, quality, timeliness.  You can actively draw their attention to it before they see the offer, opportunity or call to action.  When it is on their mind, they value it more when they encounter it in our message/conversation

  • Be conscious of your imagery.  Visual representation makes a difference.
For example, the landing page of a furniture store - with fluffy clouds OR small coins… the clouds inspire thoughts of comfort, the coins price… an experiment showed the landing page was barely noticed by customers, however the influence the different graphics had over the site search was clear.
