Ever worked in a team of great individuals, but when it comes to working together, it doesn’t quite gel?
Perhaps you’ve had someone new join a previously well-oiled team, brought a group of people together for a special project, or even had a team that have worked together for ages but over time, well that happy team feeling has just slipped away.
There are some great tools and approaches to remedy this… but seriously, where do you start? Well there is no ‘one size fix all solution’ but in working with teams across the spectrum of industries, the one common element that does make a difference is helping your team to listen to one another. It sounds to simple right? Stay with me…
One of the great contributors to team disharmony is misunderstandings; miscommunications, which can cause poor productivity and, if not addressed, leads to avoidance, issues and ultimately individuals and teams that just don’t perform at their best.
To reduce misunderstandings, we need to improve communication. Communication is a two-way activity and all too often our listening is lessened by our ‘busy-ness’, muddied by what we think we are going to hear, or obscured by our past experience.
In contrast, if we are actually listening to the other person, it reduces the chance of misunderstanding, and builds the rapport and trust that happy productive teams rely on.
Investing in your team is one of the most valuable investments you can make for your business. A great start is helping them to build their communication skills.
