Is your back up plan setting you up for failure?

I recently heard Arnold Schwarzenegger share his advice on how to achieve your goals.  He said, “Don’t have a Plan B”.

Knowing the benefit of a good plan, I was shocked.

That was until he went on to describe, “when you have a Plan B, you are giving yourself a way out.  You are already telling yourself that Plan A may not happen.”

Think of your exercise planning… ‘tomorrow I’ll get up at 5:30am and go to the gym before work… and if I find I’m too tired when the alarm goes off, I can always go after work…’  (sound familiar?)

In that moment I realised he was onto something.

In life and work, it is great to have a backup plan, but we must be sure it's a genuine Plan B, and not an escape route in case Plan A gets too tough. Take time to think through your overall strategy to achieve your goal/s and do all you can to set up Plan A for success. By all means look at your contingency planning, but hold yourself accountable to only choosing Plan B if Plan A becomes too risky, or it’s clear it’s not going to work…

Ensure your Plan B is a success strategy, rather than a loop hole.
