This week I was invited to be a member of a discussion panel at an AHRI networking event, sharing experiences and benefits of Mentoring.
No surprise, I am a true advocate; And just quietly, just a little disappointed that I didn’t know more about coaching and mentoring when I was starting out in my career... fortunately it’s never too late.
Having the right coach or mentor in your corner means you have a supportive environment with a trusted other, helping you to identify strengths and opportunities, and shift into action… usually resulting in accelerated growth and achievement of goals.
So how is mentoring different to coaching? Personally, when working with my clients, I tend to use a blend of both.
The main difference, usually a mentor is more specifically experienced in the area of interest eg may be more senior in the same organisation or industry, has faced challenges like those you are facing, etc. The relationship tends to be one where you seek advice on their specific area/s of expertise.
A coach tends to be more inclined to ask questions, with more attention given to supporting their client to use what they know, helping them to grow and build confidence in their own ability before supporting with the provision of additional tools, techniques and guidance.
If you are looking to give yourself the advantage a good coach or mentor is well worth the investment.
Tips:
Remember what works for one person may not be the solution that works for you; no matter how experienced, no-one knows your circumstance like you do… and neither coach nor mentor should tell you what you should do.
take the time to ensure you find the right coach/mentor for you. Ask around and hear about others’ experiences, and before investing your money, invest time in meeting your potential coach/mentor to ensure you are a good fit for one another.
And finally
support each other – not all coaches and mentors are the formal kind. Look around you, you may have walked the path your peers are starting on (or vice versa) help each other we are all in this together
