The Science Behind Your Best Ideas - And How to Get More of Them
Have you ever noticed that your best ideas don’t always come when you’re trying to think of them?
Maybe they pop up in the shower, just as you're falling asleep, or in the middle of the night. For me, these flashes of insight often come when I’m out running or exercising - moments where I’m not actively trying to solve anything, yet somehow, the solution appears..
As it turns out, there’s a scientific reason for this.
How Your Brain Works: Task-Positive Mode vs. Default Mode Network
Our brains operate in two distinct modes:
1️⃣ Task-Positive Mode (TPN) – This is when we’re focused, actively thinking, and solving problems in real time.
2️⃣ Default Mode Network (DMN) – This kicks in when we’re in a relaxed, unfocused state - allowing for deeper creativity, problem-solving, and reflection.
The challenge?
Most of us spend the majority of our time in Task-Positive Mode - jumping from one task to the next, filling every spare moment with emails, meetings, and notifications.
🔹 When we're constantly "switched on," we don’t leave enough space for our brains to make creative connections.
So How Can You Tap Into Your Brain’s Creative Power?
While we can’t simply switch on the Default Mode Network at will, we can create the conditions that allow it to thrive. Here are a few simple ways to give your brain the space it needs:
✔ White space between meetings - Instead of rushing from one thing to another, give yourself 5-10 minutes to reset.
✔ Quiet reflection - Sit in your favourite chair, take a few deep breaths, and allow yourself to just be.
✔ Mindful movement - A walk in nature, yoga, or even a casual stroll can free up creative thinking.
✔ Music & environment - Opt for calming music or a quiet setting rather than overstimulating noise.
✔ Pose a question - then let it go - If you’re stuck on a challenge, think about it briefly, then step away. Your subconscious will keep working on it in the background.
By intentionally making space for your Default Mode Network to activate, you’ll start to notice that insights come more often and in real time - not just when you’re miles from a notepad!
