Imagine you are heading away on your holiday, an adventure that you have been planning for some time… travelling with your ‘limited’ comforts of home in the back of your car… and the intention of following the coastal roads all the way north until you arrive at your best friend from school’s wedding. Everything is wonderful, even though you have not been here before, you are figuring it out … when all of a sudden, you encounter a sign that says… “Detour”.
You turn onto the side road as per the detour arrow only to discover that, as far as the eye can see, the alternate route is nothing but a beaten track that leaves you fearful of your car’s off road capacity…
You check your maps only to find sketchy coverage, and no information on when the road quality improves, or how far out of your way, the detour will take you.
It doesn’t matter whether it’s a holiday, a project, or a business approach; nobody enjoys that detour on your journey with no information or instructions.
There is no doubt, change without growth and/or preparation causes frustration, and overwhelm.
"Every human has four endowments - self-awareness, conscience, independent will and creative imagination. These give us the ultimate human freedom... The power to choose, to respond, to change.” ~ Stephen Covey
Change happens whether we choose it or not. However, if we actively choose to be involved in change it enables us to be more proactive in the impact it has on us; and our opportunity to adapt, influence, shape the way forward.
Prepare yourself and your team to equip them with the tools they need to adapt. One change management framework that can help with the process of change is ADKAR. Created by Prosci the ADKAR Model provides a structured approach to change with five phases to support and engage individual employees, and create organisational change.
The Prosci ADKAR acronym stands for:
Awareness of the need for change
Desire to support the change
Knowledge of how to change
Ability to demonstrate skills and behaviours
Reinforcement to make the change stick
Reduce frustration and resistance and set yourself and your team up for success.
Understanding “why” we have to change and “how” we can do what we need, enables us to feel more confident as we step into the unknown. Without the desire to engage, and/or the skills and emotional preparedness change will likely be resisted.
The winds of change never stop. Using a change framework to support the conversation with your team can help them feel informed and guided in what is most often a time of uncertainty.
Invest in developing the awareness, skills and system to support the change. It may not happen overnight, but it will be worth it.
