How do you keep your energy up when you are constantly being challenged?
We are all unique in this regard, and so the answer is ‘it depends’.
Physically we have similar needs but in varying degrees… the right amount of sleep, healthy eating and at least 30mins of movement everyday will see most of us in good stead here.
Mentally and emotionally, our self-awareness is key. Knowing about our preferences helps us to consciously recharge – like batteries for our soul.
One of these preference combinations is Introversion and Extroversion.
Contrary to a long-time belief, this preference does not signify how loud you will be at a party… it indicates how you prefer to relate to people and more particularly how you gather your energy.
In simple terms, those with an introvert preference prefer time alone to recharge, while those with an extrovert preference prefer time with other people. It would be fair to think that one preference is more suited to the ‘lockdown’ we are currently experiencing in Victoria, however both preferences need to be consciously thinking about how they are connecting with people, how they are recharging their batteries.
Those zoom team meetings will be just the thing for some, while others will prefer 1:1 catchups. No matter our preference, it is important that we all remain connected with our family and friends. Too much alone time can sneak up on any person.
Many of us can comfortably move between these preferences depending on the environment we are in eg work, home, socialising.
For me, I am borderline on the introversion / extroversion preference scale. What I know about myself, is that if I have a 1/2 day with a group of people, I need to balance that with some alone or focus work time.
On the flip side, if I go all day without speaking to someone, I feel flat and if left alone for a couple of days, start to ‘get inside my own head’.
These days, I am especially mindful of making sure I connect with someone every day – whether that is for work, a wellbeing check-in, or a ‘cooking over zoom’ call with my niece or nephews. I find a little top up every day helps keep my energy levels on an even keel.
Mindfully consider what works best for you and set yourself up to keep your batteries charged. What is your secret to keeping your energy levels up?
