Every day we have a choice… a choice to go through the motions or to take a step toward being our best self.
I believe most of us have the best of intentions. But honestly, are we really bringing our “A game”?
For years I did my best… Working hard, being responsible, being kind, getting good grades/performance reviews etc… It was a good honest start, but as I got older, I realised I was playing small, keeping it safe. That wasn’t bad – but I realised I wasn’t allowing myself to grow and develop into being the best version of me.
We each have potential; capacity and/or qualities that may be developed into future success, and the first step to achieving success, is embracing the knowledge that you have capacity to develop.
We may not all be Albert Einstein, J.K. Rowling, Usain Bolt or Jacinda Ardern, but we may be... Before they began their journey, do you think they each knew where they might end up?
No, I suspect it was more of an adventure, with them having a vision and continually taking steps toward that vision. Every day levering their strengths, building their skills, and overcoming the mistakes and challenges they undoubtedly faced along the way.
I do love a good fairy tale, but nobody just wakes up one day and are “there”, and it’s not just the “lucky ones” who have opportunity knock on their door. It takes years of hard work to be an overnight success. It is as much about knowing what you are looking for as it is luck.
When you look for red cars, they appear everywhere… so too with opportunities.
When we define what it is we aspire… then we can mindfully plot out a pathway toward achieving it. We can identify the strengths we have to harness, the skills we may need to develop and the relationships we may need to nurture.
Not only can we focus our attention on becoming our best self – we can also better appreciate the learnings that come with trying something new.
Three steps that will help you on your journey of potential
Identify what your best self looks like. Create the vision of what are you doing and where.
Break the pathway into manageable stages or steppingstones and identify what you need to do to achieve each stage.
Surround yourself with the type of people who can encourage you… challenge you… teach you.
A journey of 1,000 miles begins with just one step ~ Lao Tzu
Be bold as you step into your future, believing in yourself and your potential. With awareness of your environment and your strengths you can recognise your potential and the opportunities as they present.
What is it you aspire?
What is the next step for you toward achieving it?
